Reflective Statement
Standard: International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) Standard 2a: Design or adapt relevant learning experiences that incorporate digital tools and resources to promote student learning and creativity.
Throughout my semester, I have been working on creating a ePortfolio to show how technology is beneficial in the classroom. In today's society, technology is a great tool to be able to utilize in the classroom but also to keep a showcase of completed work. This ePortfolio has work that I have completed over the course of my Spring 2018 semester, in regards to technological tools and applications that are beneficial to the classroom.
The use of this ePortfolio is very efficient because anyone can access the hard work I have completed and put together. This work I have completed helped me realize how important technology is to include in future classrooms because, “as more schools embrace the notion of students as creators rather than merely passive consumers of knowledge, leading education organizations are devising strategies that empower student-driven media production and invention" (Adams, et al., 2016, p. 7). By becoming familiar with different tools the world has to offer right now, helped me learn more about what I can incorporate into the classroom.
This ePortfolio helps display the tools and skills I have learned to apply in classrooms. There are so many resources I have learned about, and there are new ones being developed every day. Technology in the classroom helps keep students engaged while having fun! As seen in my portfolio, there are many applications that allow students to use technology to help them learn. In the 21st century, children are all about being able to use technology in the classroom.
When I have my own classroom, I will definitely create a website that allows parents and students to access on their own time. This is what my ePortfolio allows. With the use of uploading information to a website, anyone can access it at their own convenience, which is helpful! “Today, we live in a technology and media-driven environment,” which is why it is so important to keep up on what the children are into, in order to keep them engaged in the classroom (P21 Framework, 2009). The changes that are constantly occurring in technology force teachers to keep up to date with the new tools and applications. Children today are the, “first generations to grow up with this new technology. They have spent their entire lives surrounded by and using computers, video games... cell phones, and all the other toys and tools of the digital age" (Prensky, 2001. p. 1).
This portfolio is a way for future educators to explore possible technological tools they could use in the classroom, future employers can see how technological advanced I am, and for myself to look back on and keep track of all the information I have found. I will always make sure my lessons to my students will always be relevant with the times, because the world is advancing so fast, that educators need to stay up to date on what is being produced. I highly encourage future educators to create their own ePortfolio because it keeps work organized and displayed beautifully and easily for those who are interested. What better way to share technological advice than on your very own ePortfolio!
